Privacy policy

How Yumidice handles your data, in plain words.
The short version: we never know who you are. There is no account, no email, no name. The app works from a random identifier that lives on your phone, and your coordinates are turned into a city and thrown away.
What we collect
- Location. Your device's location is used to work out which city you are in, so the dishes are the ones people actually eat there. Coordinates are resolved to a city on the server and are not stored. The app keeps your "home" location on the device only, to tell when you are travelling.
- Installation identifier. When you first open the app it generates a random identifier, stored only on your device. It is used to issue an access token, to apply fair-use rate limits, and to remember which dishes you have already seen. It is not linked to your name, email, advertising identifier or any account, and it goes away when you uninstall the app.
- Swipes. Which dishes you saved or skipped is stored against that identifier for 30 days, so the deck never shows you the same card twice. In aggregate, swipes tell us which dishes people like.
- Push token. If you allow notifications, the app registers a push token so we can tell you when the menu for a new place is ready. Turn notifications off and the token is deleted.
- Device information. Device type, operating system and app version, for fixing bugs.
What we do with it
- Serve dishes for the place you are standing in
- Keep your saved dishes and preferences on your device
- Avoid repeating cards, and learn which dishes people enjoy
- Send the notifications you asked for
- Find and fix problems in the app
Where it lives
Saved dishes, preferences, your home location and reminder settings are stored on your device. The dish catalogue is stored on our servers per city, not per person. Swipes and push tokens are stored on our servers against the installation identifier only.
Third parties
- OpenAI writes the dish catalogue ahead of time from city names only. Your location is never sent to OpenAI.
- Cloudflare hosts our API, database and images.
- Wikimedia Commons and Openverse are the sources of the openly licensed food photography. The credit for each photo is shown in the app.
- Google Maps opens when you tap Find nearby. What happens there is covered by Google's policy.
- Expo delivers push notifications to your device.
- AdMob shows advertisements to users without Pro, and RevenueCat processes Pro purchases through the App Store or Google Play.
Your choices
- Deny location permission. The app cannot deal a deck without it, but it will not ask twice.
- Turn notifications and travel reminders off in Settings.
- Uninstall the app, which removes everything stored on your device and orphans the identifier on our side.
- Write to hello@yumidice.app with any question about your data.
Children
The app is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
